Warren's World - A March of Dimes Advocacy Project
It began with a concert in north Toronto that brought the Rolling Stones to town to headline a relief effort during the outbreak of SARS. Our contribution was to advance the cause of inclusion and accessibility.

In 2003, during the Toronto Rocks SARS concert at Downsview Park, the March of Dimes Government Relations department in partnership wit 4NPC.com and Molson organized and hosted the world's biggest Accessibility Section at an outdoor music event-- aptly titled Accessibility Rocks! More than 3,000 fans with disabilities and their caregivers enjoyed this international event in a safe and secure environment.

A movement was born.

Accessibility Rocks has evolved into an advocacy feature of March of Dimes Canada. The Advocate, on online magazine on Government Affairs, was launched in December 2005 as a precursor to, and announcement of, our newest initiative, Warren's World (a continuing feature of Accessibility Rocks).

Warren's World, a March of Dimes advocacy project, features the passion and drive of 23-year old Warren Rupnarain, who uses a motorized wheelchair as a result of Cerebral Palsy. Warren's World originally tested the waters of accessibility during the 2006 federal election by visiting every election campaign office in Toronto (that's 66 offices and meetings with candidates in fewer than 3 weeks!). The initiative received media attention locally, nationally and internationally (radio, television, newspaper and internet coverage). The daily experiences of the Crew were recorded and reported on at the official website, www.warrrensworld.ca <http://www.warrrensworld.ca> (which is an extension of the March of Dimes, www.dimes.on.ca <http://www.dimes.on.ca>). The site, developed by 4NPC.com, featured never-used-before integration of multimedia technology, including blogs, podcasts, digital video, exclusive online coverage and online voting.

Warren's World has been made possible through the creativity and generosity of Liberty Motors, HBC, Centennial College, Nikon Canada, Ryerson University - and Direct Hit Promotions, who created and designed custom-made Warren's World jackets, which were conceived and personally delivered by our Global Sultan of Swag himself, Bob Burrows.

Every new corner turned is just the beginning for Warren's World. We need a fully inclusive Canada with real accessibility for all Canadians coast to coast -- because Accessibility Rocks! And this is what Canada is supposed to be all about. Only Liberal Incumbent John Godfrey's office was visited on this day. The offices of the Conservative and NDP candidates will be visited shortly.
The office of Liberal Incumbent John Godfrey is located on Laird Drive. Situated on a second floor, with a front entrance that is blocked by a step-up, and only a flight of stairs serving as the means to entry, this office is not wheelchair accessible in any way. Warren and crew waited outside the office on Laird Drive for approximately 15 minutes to speak to a campaign official about the inaccessibility of the office. It was agreed by the six-member crew of Warren's World that this office demonstrated a very low level of awareness and sensitivity to disability issues. Campaign Manager Pam Gutteridge stated that John Godfrey is committed to accessibility, but that the location of the office was chosen by a campaign committee. Pam acknowledged that the situation in this office is regrettable, and that the importance of accessibility had been raised for this campaign for future elections as a result of the Warren's World visit.
Thumbs Down!
Update: As of Friday January 13th, we have been informed by a campaign official from John Godfrey's office that the adjacent office space of Voice Print Canada may be used for accessibility for anyone with disabilities wishing to participate in the John Godfrey Campaign. Warren demonstrates that change is possible, which is at least a step in the right direction. It should be noted that the evaluation of the official official campaign location and experience of Warren's World remains a Thumbs Down.
